Now that I have gone through my mourning period, I will be posting a review of the Maui tournament in the next week. I'm going to try to have it up by Tuesday or Wednesday, depends on how fast I can get through my lab work. I plan to discuss what was good, what was bad, what was ok, etc. etc.
I'm also going to post a preview for Long Beach St. by Monday evening, that wont take as long as the Maui review so I'll be able to fit it in for sure.
In other news, Kenpom has us ranked at 10th overall, with Kentucky at 14 and Michigan St. at 8. UConn beat Kentucky by 17 in the finals to take home the title. Cal has the only win against a ranked team in the Pac-10, beating number 21 Temple 57-50. I'm a tad surprised we moved up, but at the same time, it is reasonable considering how well we faired despite poor shooting. As a reference, in our 3 wins we hit 12, 13, and 17 3 pointers while in our losses we have hit a combined 9 for 32. We have other options than our 3 point shot, but it appears against skilled teams, it is a bit of an achilles heel for the Huskies. This is something we need to change if we expect to make a deep run. We have to be more consistent with our shooting and willing to change our game plan if we want to win.
Arizona is the next best team in the Pac-10 ranking in at 15 according to Kenpom, followed by UCLA at 41, ASU at 50, WSU at 57, Stanford is at 61, Cal at 63, USC at 73, Oregon at 115, and OSU is in last at 137. If this is any indication of how the year will play out, expect it to be a two horse race for the Pac-10 title.
Texas A&M and Texas Tech are the best remaining non conference foes on UW's schedule, coming in at 43 and 68 respectively.
We need to win out in nonconference and dominate the Pac-10 if we are to garner any respect and gain high seeding. It would be in the Dawg's best interest to get a 3 seed or higher to avoid playing the 1 seed until the Elite 8. To do this, I would think the Huskies would need to go 16-2 or better and possibly win the Pac-10 tournament. That should be more than enough to gain a 2 or 3 seeding, maybe not a 1, but possibly, depending on other teams' successes.
More later, heads up Dawg fans, there are still many games to played and a lot for our players to learn and master. We will be ready come tournament time, Romar will make sure of that
